REPERTOIRE AND PROJECTS

Even though sacred music, along with Icelandic folk music has long been a big part of the choir's repertoire, Vox Feminae has performed all kinds of music. Vox Feminae also places emphases on modern Icelandic music and a few composers have written music for the choir.

The choir has had a plethora of performances, both in Iceland and abroad. Many renowned artists have worked and/or performed with Vox Feminae and the choir has also had the privilege of performing with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra.  In the year 2000 the choir was awarded a silver medal in the VIIIth International Sacred Music Choir Competition held at the Vatican in the name of the composer Palestrina.

Below is a list of Vox Feminae's biggest projects over the years.

 2009
May 6th

Wednesday May 6th at 20 in Hafnarborg (centre of Hafnarfjörður) Vox feminae performed music from the 16th and 17th century.  The choir performed madrigals from many countries, including Claudio Monteverdi, Passerau, Giovanni Gastoldi, John Dowland, Thomas Morley, Orlando Gibbons, O. Vecchi Vecchi  and Atla Heimi Sveinsson.

Madrigals are polyphone everyday songs and their origin can be traced to the time of the renaissance in Italy, when the noble class started to hire musicians into their service.  Choirs therefore worked in the Italian courts which sung madrigals for their masters and their guests.  Little by little form of music spread and reached popularity, especially in England.  The majority of the poems are about love in its many images, happiness, love, despair, regret and pain.

Other performers at the Vox Feminae concert were soloists from the choir, Símon Ívarsson guitarist and Marion Herrera harpist.  Margrét J. Pálmadóttir was the musical director of the concert.
